2024-01-11 MEMORY ETERNAL. Iurii Mefodievich Solomin

The Chancellery of the Head of the Russian Imperial House, H.I.H. The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, is deeply saddened to announce the death of Iurii Mefodievich Solomin, a renowned figure in Russian theater and cinema, the Artistic Director of the State Academic Malyi Theatre, People’s Artist of the USSR, knight of the Imperial Order of St. Anna, and Professor at the M. S. Shchepkin Higher School of Theatrical Arts. He was 89 years old.

Iurii Mefodievich Solomin was born on June 18, 1935, in Chita, in a family of music teachers. He was the son of Mefodii Viktorovich Solomin and Zinaida Ananievna Solomina (née Riabtseva).

 

He graduated from the M. S. Shchepkin Higher School of Theatrical Arts in 1957 and then joined the company of the Malyi Theatre. In 1988, he became its Artistic Director. From 1990 to 1991, he was the Minister of Culture of the RSFSR.

 

Iurii Mefodievich met many times with the Head of the Russian Imperial House, H.I.H. The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, and he took part in a number of the Romanoff dynasty’s social and cultural events and activities. For services to the nation, Grand Duchess Maria of Russia awarded Yuri Mefodievich the Imperial Order of St. Anna, the Romanoff Prize, and the Imperial Commemorative Medal “The 400th Anniversary of the House of Romanoff, 1613-2013”.

 

The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, her son and heir, Tsesarevich and Grand Duke George of Russia, and his spouse, Princess Victoria Romanovna, extend their deepest condolences to Iurii Mefodievich’s family, friends, students, and colleagues.

 

May the Lord grant eternal rest to the newly reposed servant of God George in His Kingdom.
