Biography of Prince Mikhail Pavlovich:

Prince Mikhail Pavlovich (from 1976 to 1985, H.I.H. Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich of Russia) (before 1976 and after 1985, H.R.H. Prince Franz-Wilhelm-Victor-Christoph-Stephan of Prussia) (b. Gruenberg. Silesia, August 21/September 3, 1943). A member of the Prussian Royal House. Son of H.R H. Prince Karl Franz Joseph of Prussia and his wife, H.S.H. Princess Henriette of Schönaich-Carolath. He studied law and business administration at the University of Mainz and the University of Frankfurt am Main. Between 1976 and 1985, he was the husband of the present Head of the Russian Imperial House, H.I.H. Grand Duchess Maria of Russia. He is the father of H.I.H. the Heir, Tsesarevich, and Grand Duke George of Russia. In view of the fact that his future bride would inherit the rights and duties of the Head of the Russian Imperial House, Prince Franz Wilhelm before his wedding converted to Orthodoxy and took the name Mikhail Pavlovich. This was by mutual agreement and with the blessing of the then Head of the Russian Imperial House, H.I.H. Grand Duke Wladimir Kirillovich, and the then Head of the German Imperial and Prussian Royal House, H.I.&R.H. Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia. The groom also signed a marriage contract agreeing to raise any children from his marriage to Grand Duchess Maria of Russia in the Orthodox faith and as members of the Russian Imperial House. H.I.H. Grand Duke Wladimir, for his part, recognized his future son-in-law, Mikhail Pavlovich, as a member of the Russian Imperial House and created him a Grand Duke. The civil wedding took place on August 22/September 4, 1976, in Dinard (France). The Orthodox wedding took place in Madrid on September 9/22, 1976. H.R.H. Prince Franz-Wilhelm gave up the title of Grand Duke when the couple divorced in 1985, but he remains a practicing member of the Russian Orthodox Church.
