In order to recognize those who have made a significant contribution to the preservation of the memory of the heroic feats performed by the peoples of Russia and of allied soldiers during the First World War of 1914-1918, we have established the medal “In Memory of the 100th Anniversary of the Great War, 1914-1918,” and we confirm its Statute governing the awarding and wearing of the medal.

“In Memory of the 100th Anniversary of the Great War, 1914-1918”

The Imperial medal “In Memory of the 100th Anniversary of the Great War, 1914-1918” has been instituted by the Head of the Russian Imperial House, H.I.H. The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, in Madrid on August 23/September 5, 2015, on the 100th anniversary of the assumption of overall command of the armed forces of the Russian Empire by the Holy Royal Passion-Bearer Emperor Nicholas II.

  1. The right to wear the Imperial Medal “In Memory of the 100th Anniversary of the Great War, 1914-1918” is confirmed by a decree issued by the Head of the Russian Imperial House, H.I.H. The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, to persons of both sexes who have made a significant contribution to the preservation of the memory of the heroic feats performed by the peoples of Russia and allied soldiers during the First World War of 1914-1918.
  2. On the obverse of the Imperial Medal “In Memory of the 100th Anniversary of the Great War, 1914-1918” is depicted three soldiers setting off for battle under a banner bearing the image of Christ and inscribed with the words “God is with us”; on either side of the soldiers appears the dates “1914,” on the left, and “1918,” on the right; below the soldiers appears the device and ribbon of the Imperial Order of St. George; the entire medal is edged by a narrow annular rim. On the reverse, the personal monogram of the Head of the Russian Imperial House, H.I.H. The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, appears above an inscription in traditional block letters reading “Loyalty, Honor, and Self-Sacrifice are Immortal” (“Vernost’, Chest’, Samopozhertvovanie bezsmertny”—a quote from the “Address from the Head of the Russian Imperial House” on July 19/August 1, 2014, delivered on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I), all surrounded by a laurel wreath. The diameter of the medal is 32 millimeters. The ribbon for the medal combines the Romanoff House colors and the colors of the Order of St. George.
  3. The Imperial Medal “In Memory of the 100th Anniversary of the Great War, 1914-1918” is worn on the left breast.
  4. Those awarded the Imperial Medal “In Memory of the 100th Anniversary of the Great War, 1914-1918” receive a certificate, issued by H.I.H.’s Chancellery, which confirms the right to wear the medal.
