The Head of the House of Romanoff mourns the loss of life in Karelia

From the Head of the Russian Imperial House

It was with deep and profound sadness that I learned of the tragic events on Lake Syamozero in Karelia, which led to the deaths of so many children. I pray for the repose of their souls and for the quick recovery of those young boys and girls who were injured. I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of those who drowned.

One can only hope that this terrible event will lead to a significant improvement in the governmental safety regulations in children’s and youth institutions in our country. But it is likewise important to remember that no additional child safety regulations, no matter how good they may be, can be effective if the adult employees of the institutions do not embrace and recognize the special responsibility they bear for the safety of the children under their care, do not follow the dictates of a well-formed conscience, or do not attempt to acquire the necessary training and professional skills necessary for those charged with the care of our young people.
