2020-11-14 The Tsesarevich and Grand Duke George of Russia makes a working visit to Kostroma

On November 12-13, 2020, H.I.H. The Heir, Tsesarevich, and Grand Duke George of Russia made a working visit to Kostroma, a city closely connected to the history of the Romanoff dynasty.  The Grand Duke visited the city to support the work of the Charity Foundation “Rus’” (see https://foodbankrus.ru).

On November 13, His Imperial Highness attended the opening ceremony of the new offices of the Foundation. Later, in the administrative building for the Kostroma Region, the Grand Duke, representing the Charity Foundation “Rus’,” signed an Agreement of Cooperation with the Kostroma Regional Government, represented by Governor S. K. Sitnikov.

At the end of the formal ceremonies, His Imperial Highness attended services at Holy Trinity-Ipatievsky Monastery, where, on March 14/27, 1613, his ancestor, the legitimate heir of the extinct House of Riurikovich and founder of the Romanoff dynasty, Mikhail Feodorovich Romanoff, was proclaimed tsar by a delegation sent from the Assembly of the Land in Moscow.

The Grand Duke also met with the abbot of the monastery, Hegumen Peter (Yeryshalov).

On November 14, the Tsesarevich and Grand Duke visited the Church of Holy Great Martyr Panteleimon, located in the Kostroma Regional Hospital No. 1.  The rector of the church, Archpriest Dmitrii Sazonov, who is also the Chairman of the Kostroma branch of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society, spoke with His Imperial Highness about the founding of the church by Patriarch Aleksei II (+2008), of blessed memory, and its construction.  He also performed a short service before the Icon of St. Panteleimon, which contains a fragment of the holy healer’s relics, and recounted stories of the miraculous healing of the sick, especially those with “deathly fevers.”

Then H.I.H. The Heir, Tsesarevich, and Grand Duke George of Russia proceeded to the Epiphany Cathedral in the Epiphany-St. Anastasia Convent, where, before the Fedorov Icon of the Mother of God, a thanksgiving moleben was served for the miraculous saving of the Grand Duke’s life during the automobile crash in St. Petersburg on November 14, 2019. The hymn “Many Years” was sung for governmental and ecclesiastical authorities, for the Head of the Imperial House of Russia, H.I.H. The Grand Duchess Maria of Russia, and for the Tsesarevich and Grand Duke George of Russia.

It was providential that the anniversary of Grand Duke George’s miraculous escape from harm in this terrible automobile accident should coincide with his visit to Kostroma, the cradle of the Romanoff dynasty.

Later that same day, His Imperial Highness met with His Eminence Metropolitan Ferapont of Kostroma and Nerekhta.

His Eminence blessed the Grand Duke and noted the importance of the unbroken spiritual connection between the Imperial House of Russia and the holy city and region of Kostroma.
